✈️ My embarrassing podcast fail in Australia & what I learned

Ever had that moment of pure panic trying to set up equipment in a new place while your guest awkwardly watches? Oh have I been there.

After my embarrassing experience in 2016 trying to interview one of Australia's biggest podcasters with gear stuffed in my backpack (and failing), I vowed to find better solutions.

Here are the three approaches I now use with clients who are podcasting while traveling:

1. THE BACKPACK SETUP

Pack light but effective - a portable interface or recorder like the Zoom H6 or Scarlett 2i2, two mics, and your phone camera.

Or a Sony FX3 for a more professional camera.

The DJI wireless mic set is fantastic if you need ultra-portable mics. Just remember to arrive early and set up before your guest.

2. THE HOTEL ROOM SOLUTION

When traveling for work and recording remotely: Your laptop, a good USB mic (or XLR with interface), and your iPhone as a webcam using Camo software.

Even AirPods work as many guests will show up with them anyways.

3. THE LOCAL STUDIO RENTAL

This is becoming my favorite recommendation, even for everyday creators.

Professional studios are now accessible in most cities - not just LA and NYC.

Show up, record with perfect equipment and lighting, and focus entirely on your guest. Worth every penny for special episodes.

Mix these approaches based on your needs. Don't feel like you need studio quality for every episode. Save that for special ones.

Hi Reader, Three years ago, I had a client who spent two months getting ready to start her podcast. She bought the mic. Set up her recording space. Even had her first five episodes planned out. But she never hit record. The editing software paralyzed her. Every tutorial she watched made it seem more complicated than it needed to be. This is a major bottleneck that dozens of clients inevitably encounter. I’ve found that editing is one of the biggest things that holds people back from starting...
